Matt Guidry's Site |
This site's purpose is to provide information about projects I have done with Programming, Electronics, High Voltage, and Electromagnetic propulsion, as well as serve as a bit of a blog. My brother Jonathan came up with the name for the site, since all things related to computers and electronics rely on copper in some small way at least. Hosting is provided for free through a promotional deal from 1&1 Internet Inc. When the promo deal expires I will probably migrate over to Total Choice Hosting which has a very good reputation.
This site was designed to look best in the Mozilla Firefox browser. I've made sure it renders correctly in Internet Explorer, but it is most certainly optimized for Firefox. A surprisingly large portion of my friends use Firefox anyway, and since it's amazingly superior to Internet Explorer, I see no need to cater to it's peculiar responses to compliant code. Because of its increased security and functionality, I highly encourage all visitors who use Internet Explorer to switch. I am checking each page to ensure it is compliant with the W3C's definition for XHTML 1.0 Strict, and I encourage all other webmasters to write compliant code, and make an effort to learn CSS. It takes some effort, but it's really worth it for the ease of management.
I'm 18 years old, and interested in elecronic and computer stuff. I'm an Eagle Scout as of September 2003. I live in southern California. I've graduated from high school and I'm currently employed at a local theme park. It's really a bit of a dump and poorly managed, but it gets me a paycheck.
I graduated from Redlands High School on June 9th, 2004 near the top of my class. I am attending the University of California, Santa Barbara this fall, and I intend to major in electrical engineering. At this time I'm not sure what particular field to specialize in. I have also not entirely given up on Computer Science, which is still a big interest of mine. I may investigate the possibility of a minor or double major in that topic.
Aside from what you see on the rest of this site, I enjoy reading books. I've read so many it's hard to list the ones I like, but some that I can remember include the Harry Potter books, the Star Wars book universe, especially Timothy Zahn's books, Katherine Paterson's books, Madeleine L'engle, and Bruce Coville.
I also do a fair amount of web surfing. The sites I visit most regularly are The Register for news in the technology world, PCMech Forum for computer discussion, the [H] Forum for some quality modding, electronics, and programming discussion, Bit-tech Forums where I participate in the electronics section, The HV Community which is practically unparalleled for discussion of science, particularly high voltage and pulsed systems like coilguns and railguns, The Geek Group, since "The geek shall inherit the earth", then of course I occasionally check up on ebay and slashdot, but who doesn't?
I have two parents, an older brother, and yes, a twin brother. Some people find that last bit fascinating, which really gets annoying after 18 years.
In general I hope to someday be a college professor, with a consulting or research career on the side, because I've enjoyed what teaching I've done and in a university one ideally has access to lots of equipment and other resources.
